taking apart psu

Go to solution Solved by Advent,

CABLES WHERE DO I PUT DEM CABLES

1.) Wrap them in a plastic bag, then tape it off so no paint gets in.

2.) Tape off everything else you don't want to paint.

3.) Paint PSU (make sure to lay down primer before hand.

4.) ???

5.) Profit.

EDIT: Formatting!

so today i decided that i wanted to paint my psu white. so i took it apart but i cant remove the pcb without somehow unhooking the power in cable on the psu pcb or taking out the powerplug and switch. so i wonder is it a stupid idea to go solder the things of of the pcb or will it be fine. and what is the worst thing that could happen

The worst thing that can happen is that it blows up when you turn it back on. I seriously hope that you know what you are doing, there is a massive amount of charge stored in those capacitors.

I recommend not doing it, unless you are really comfortable with soldering. Worst case scenario: breaking the PSU (and with it taking down the whole system)

How much can you open the PSU without desoldering anything? If you can enough for a piece of paper to go in then you could mask off the holes for the fan if possible and then the switch and the socket on the outside of it... not sure if that would be possible for you though.

or i dont understand what you mean but if i where to cover up all the holes where would i put all the cables becaus its not fully modular

why don't you take it apart cover all the wholes vents in tape and then put it back together and spray?

capacitors can hold deadly charge for about 5 mins after draining so watch out.

where would i put the cables and im afraid i would miss tiny spots and then having to do it again

oh and these websites just solderd the cables of like i planned to do

Or he could get a really bad electrical burn.

I really dont see the point in taking it apart, why not just tape it off?

If you are not confident about taking apart the PSU and soldering then you should not attempt it. Period. I've taken many PSU's apart and I still get zapped occasionally and I know what I'm doing.

Just mask everything off and paint it that way.

Hide the psu with plates. http://i.imgur.com/LxEaXai.jpg :D

2 Plates, with holes for cabling. Not doable?

Not everyone has access to a work shop or tools to fabricate things.

Yea, but a 2 custom cut plate with cuple holes and painted should not be a problem... relatives... etc

Not everyone has friends or relatives with access to a work area or power tools either :V

If I had access to a workshop/paint booth and tools I would be doing scratch builds right now.
