Im wondering which nas or server program would be the best to use for my custom built Nas System ive used freenas and i thougt it was alright but then i switched to rockstor and im thinkin the same thing . im trying to get one the is mostly free or at lest not expensive. is there any otheres that people have tryed or thinks is the best

RAID 5 or RAID 6 is the usual recommendation for best balance between reliability, performance and capacity.

Ideally go with supported solutions so you receive updates.

 

FreeNAS / NAS4Free / Open Media Vault / Unraid / Windows Storage Spaces / DIY Linux (for example: MDADM or ZFS) / Rockstor - are about all I can think of for homebrew storage solutions.

 

I think spinning up your own linux box + ZFS or MDADM is pretty cool, because you're in control and there's almost limitless things you can do with linux. Just a lot more effort compared to next next next.
