Second Display Won't Detect

Crunchy Dragon
Go to solution Solved by emosun,

restart the machine with only the hdmi monitor plugged in , maybe windows will default to using it.

Afternoon.

I'm trying to get a second display running since it's been ages since I had that capability, only to find that I seemingly am unable to actually get a second monitor to detect on my system.

Specs:

Ryzen 5 1600

GeForce GTX 780

8Gb DDR4-2133

Windows 10 Home 1803

GeForce GameReady Driver 398.11

Currently using a Dell SE2717HR as my main display, trying to get either of my other Dell monitors to display. One monitor only has VGA, the other has VGA and DVI(I don't currently have a DVI cable, otherwise this would be a cakewalk).

I'm able to run my main display off of an HDMI to DVI adapter, but my HDMI to VGA adapter refuses to work no matter what. It's an I/O Gear cable, I don't know the exact model.

Can anybody offer an explanation as to why my HDMI to VGA adapter won't work with my PC? The adapter itself definitely works, I can use it on my Raspberry Pi with no trouble.

I have a box of DVI cables. If you need one, just PM me where to send it.

Without giving away my address, if at all possible. If I run out of luck and that's my last option, I'll let ya know :)

Hoping there's a free option here, preferably with stuff I have around the house.

can you try a dvi to vga adaptor?

the issue is hdmi is purely digital, so a chip in the adaptor needs to convert the signal.

dvi-i ports (not sure, don't quote me on that) have pins for vga as well, so can be converted with an adaptor

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

as you can see, the pins labeled with C are analog pins. if your card has a dvi port with those pins on it, you can use a dvi to vga adaptor..

It's fine. I have almost everyone on the forums' address anyway from doing giveaways.

My card has DVI-D and DVI-I, the problem is I only have the above mentioned adapters; DVI to HDMI, VGA to HDMI.

I've had weird experiences with digital to analog adapters. I have a displayport to VGA one and it works fine for my PC but on my parents' one the computer used to ramp up fans to 100% if it was plugged in for like 20 seconds before booting, and then one day it just decided to stop booting when it was plugged in.

EDIT: Actually wasn't that it would stop booting, it was that the monitor with the adapter just wouldn't display. Really strange.

Ryzen CPUs don't have integrated GPUs. I don't intend to game on the second display though.

-info-

HDMI output is purely digital, whereas VGA is analog - - so a plain old HDMI-to-VGA adapter cable isn't going to work.

What you need is an adapter which incorporates a DAC (digital-to-analog converter), these are called "Active" so you need to buy an Active HDMI to VGA adapter instead of the non-DAC one that you have now.

Link to Store.

I could be wrong.

This is where it gets confusing though, since I can use the adapter with my Raspberry Pi and my laptop without issues converting HDMI to VGA.

Cut one end off a vga cable and solder directly to gpu. Its free if you dont screw up :D

Or buy a 0,90$ adapter from flea-bay and wait a month.

ah okay.. do you have a free x16 slot? get a really old card that's capable of running the screen and plug that in? i believe the geforce 8000 series still has drivers for Windows 10.

the raspberry pi might support analog output via the hdmi port but the 780 most likely doesn't

if its not an active adapter and just a passive cable then i can see why compatibility would vary.

and or , the monitor isn't handshaking with the card so the card has no idea that a monitor is even plugged in vs the raspberry pi which might send a signal regardless if a monitor is present

I would do this if I had spare PCIe power cables. The other issue is that the only spare GPUs I have that feature VGA are my GeForce 6200 PCI, and my GeForce4 MX420 AGP.

My GTX 780 also takes an 8pin and 6pin which leaves my CX550M with no spare PCIe connectors.

The last one sounds more accurate, I can't get anything to display from my 780 via HDMI to VGA. And I've got 4 monitors here that all have at least one VGA port.

can you force the hdmi on the 780 to output without any cable plugged in?

i'm guessing the cable is preventing the card from seeing a monitor , or the cable is passive and the card just doesn't do what the pi does

How would I go about doing that? The HDMI port definitely works, I can run my main display via HDMI cable no problem.

i had a geforce 8500gt, that didn't requite external power.. now yes it was so slow that it couldn't even play 1080p 60fps youtube, but still it did work..

and i see no reason why an ancient PCI gpu doesn't work if you have a PCI slot on your mobo still.. i doubt that since it's a modern ryzen system..

i think windows has a sort of button for it in the display properties along the lines of "force detect displays" or something.

I havent had this problem in forever so i don't really remember how to do it

Yeah, no PCI slot on here. The last "modern" system I had that PCI on the mainboard was FM2-based...
