Bought a GPU

Chewbacca

Hey guys,

Just looking for some advice. So I went to PC world today to have a look at some pc parts as I want to get into pc gaming. I ended up walking out with a GTX1060 3GB.

My idea for my build is an i3-8350K, on a Gigabyte Z370P with 8GB memory. A 128SSD and a 1TB HD, or an External HD as I saw a WD 4TB for £95 on Amazon. All inside an NZXT case.

Any help would get great.

Thanks,

Charlie

There’s nothing wrong with the items on your build.

since it’s a low budget one the 3G is fine. Can’t play tripleA games at max setting but I doubt you were aiming for that anyways

And here is a pro tip: Ask for a refund, the gtx 1060 3gb sucks so much. I had a 1060 3gb and i had so much problems with it. Get the 6gb if you can

For 1080p gaming 1060 3gb is totally fine.

to be honest, I don't really want to spend more than say £900-£1000.

Is the 1060 3GB that bad?

It's really not that bad. It's really worth it to get 8400 instead of that i3

The 8350K isn't really worth it. Get a i5 8400 if it's possible. It would grant way better performance for the price. 6 cores, although locked will make quite the difference. 1060 3GB is an ok gpu. As long as you game at 1080p and your expectations are realistic the card should handle most games at high settings.

He will also be able to choose a B360 board because the chip is locked anyway, so he will spend less actually.

@Chewbacca @Ekst4zy I had an i5 6400, gtx 1060 3gb, 16gb ram, 450w psu and it was a shit pc. Always bottleneck problems, always came short in terms of VRAM etc...

I advice not getting the 3gb based on personal experience. And i understand you're on a budget but the 6gb will be worth that money, that i can guarantee.

Well, something with a B360 chipset as i5 8400 is a locked cpu. I have had great experiences with ASUS so something like this should work just fine:

This one should be ok too. A little more low end and has no VRM heatsinks but it should work fine.

Is there a CPU cooler included with the 8th gen?

Yeah, but it is quite bad honestly. If you are on a budget use it, and save up for a different one.

If you are willing to spend 20 pounds this is a good budget option for locked cpus:

I'm sorry man, but I call BS. You probably can't adjust your settings properly.

I'm on gtx 970 3.5gb and it's alright.

The i3-8350K is not a value buy. An i5-8400 is much better. While it has a low base clock, its turbo clocks are very good.

A 128GB ssd is on the small side for modern systems. 240GB+ would be the minimum I'd suggest.

The GTX 1060 3GB is a decent gpu but it will struggle with higher settings. When it does, just dial back the settings. GPU are easily upgraded when and if something better becomes desirable.

Something along the following lines will provide a good experience. The gpu is a placeholder for the unspecified brand already purchased.

@brob

Thanks so much for that. Im actually returning the 1060 tomorrow. I paid waaaay more than I should have for it, literally for maybe £20 more I could get the 6GB from Aria I believe.

Much appreciated,

Charlie
