Does PSU size matter?

HunterL
Go to solution Solved by RobFRaschke,

Many ITX cases these days have full size ATX power supplies wedged in there somewhere. Some will have SFX or SFX-L powersupplies. I have seen only a handful of mATX or ATX cases that use these though.

Your case, is a standard ATX. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not list the maximum length, so don't go too craxy on a huge PSU. Given the price of that case, I doubt you'll be dropping $200+ on a massive powersupply, but just something to keep in mind while you're shopping for your PSU.

PS. EVGA's gold 550W is a great PSU and is very reasonably priced.

i have a the DIY-F2-W case (mATX) and do i have to get a psu that matches the size of the case? or does case size only refer to what size motherboard it can fit?

Unless it's an ITX case, any regular psu will fit in any matx or atx case. A case size typically refers to the maximum sized motherboard it can fit, but also its physical size. For example a full tower atx case is larger than a mid tower atx case even though both support atx motherboards and full sized power supplies.

EVGA has about a billion different 550W gold PSUs. If you're referring to the G1 NEX, it's an overpriced piece of ancient crap. The rest is quite loud, and generally not well priced

I just got, I believe, a G2, and idle in an old VSK case it's not at all audible over my Xbox 1 idling next to the PC, and at full bore, pulling about 400W from the wall, it's still no louder than my Hyper X Evo or case fans, none of which are over 1100rpm. It's not silent, by any means, but in this price range I've had much louder and much less stable power supplies.

Region makes a big difference in what to recommend too.  Where I live, the $50-$100 range is dominated by EVGA gold PSUs.  Where you are, maybe be quiet! is an option.  I never tapped my PSU to the point where I thought it was too noisy, so I still feel pretty comfortable in recommending the G2/GQ/GS/G+.

I will say the G2 and GQs are kinda big and could potentially be a tight fit in some cases.  Not in width because that's universal, but I've had a situation where the cables had to kind of run through the hard drive bay.  I don't know if I'd recommend them in that case (read the reviews).  The case does refer to the motherboard size, but keep in mind you are giving up some real-estate with a stand up case that is meant to house an matx board at max.

Looking at actual, objective measurements, the G2 550W is quite loud. You'll have to look quite far to find louder PSUs than EVGA branded ones.

What are you powering?
