1. Budget & Location

Looking to spend around $1000-1200

Located in the US, prices USD

2. Aim

This is a new build for my wife, it will be used for 1080p gaming, digital painting/art, and general use

3. Monitors

1x 1080p

4. Peripherals

I'll be buying all peripherals including monitors and OS separately, though would welcome any monitor recommendations

5. Why are you upgrading?

Replacing an old damaged laptop

I haven't built a PC since around 2010 and only have a vague idea of what I should be going for. I've been using logical increments as a rough guide but not sure how current the information is. I suspect there are better value motherboards etc out there. Would appreciate any comments/suggestions :)

We're not talking about the 8400 here. 8700 is faster than Ryzen 2600 no matter how hard you push it.

I agree with the SSD and RAM choice, just not the CPU platform.

Ok, couple points here.

-A regular 8700 on a Z370 board is a huge waste

Dont bother with the Z370 chipset if youre not going to overclock, which you cant overclock that regular 8700. Look into one of the cheaper motherboards with H370 or something. And buying that 8700 with intent to upgrade to an 8700k is also a waste of 300$, just get an i5 8400 or even whatever the i3 is called in that case.

-The H7 is a good cooler, and its my personal preference over the 212 evo in that price bracket, but you dont need one.

Youre using a locked processor, the stock cooler will be plenty because it simply wont get hot. If you insist on an aftermarket cooler, even just for aesthetics, by all means go for it, i once had a BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3 on an i5 4460s, so i cant judge for aesthetics. But if youre looking to save any money, save yourself that 35$.

-Invest in 2400mhz or higher memory.

Theres not too much difference in memory speed for a lot of applications, but for some stuff you may want 2400mhz or higher. Its usually not any more expensive (especially if youre buying Vengeance LPX which is expensive anyway), and it might net you some performance gains in some games and professional applications.

-A 1060 is a poor GPU pair for an i7

Save the 1060 for the i5's, if youre gonna go i7, get a better GPU, or get a lower tier one and save up for a high end GPU. If you want the 1060, take my above advice and go with an i5 8400 on H370 for a more even and properly matched hardware pair.

Otherwise, looks pretty standard.

for the monitor i would suggest the LG 24MP59G-P

An i7-8700 is probably more cpu than really needed, but it won't hurt and will probably extent the useful life of the system.

I like the H7. While the i7-8700 comes with a stock cooler an aftermarket cooler like the H7 will be quieter and do a better job.

DDR4-266 is a better match to the cpu.

While it adds to the cost, a 1TB ssd simplifies storage while offering excellent performance.

A 450W psu is more than enough for the build.
