I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

No worries. I'm kind of shocked how far $550 will go right now.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I KNEW you'd come in with almost exactly the same thing but a 1050 Ti instead! xD

I just edited your build with a 1050TI and a better PSU

Hi there. I think you would be overpaying for that GPU since it's an old model and that's way more than its previous MSRP when it was new. I'm not the best at choosing components, but I'll give it a shot.

CPU: Intel - Core i3-8100 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($118.69 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI - B360M PRO-VD Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($56.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory  ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Inland - Professional 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($25.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($43.90 @ OutletPC)

Case: Cougar - MX330 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($24.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: Corsair - CXM (2015) 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($29.49 @ Newegg)

Notes:

  • I removed the CPU cooler for now, the intel stock HSF would do. If you find it too noisy, then you can always replace it later on.
  • I basically chose a cheaper board for budget reasons.
  • I chose a faster single stick RAM for future upgradeability.
  • Added an SSD. It's hard to live without an SSD these days.
  • Chose a newer and much faster GPU.
  • Chose a cheaper case, for budget reasons. Sorry.
  • Chose a lower quality PSU. For budget reasons again. But don't worry, this PSU is good enough

Edit: I tried building another one

CPU: Intel - Pentium G4560 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($54.69 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI - B250M PRO-VD Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($40.99 @ B&H)
Memory: GeIL - EVO POTENZA 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($77.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Inland - Professional 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($25.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($43.90 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 3GB Windforce OC Video Card  ($224.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Cougar - MX330 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($24.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: Corsair - CXM (2015) 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($29.49 @ Newegg)

Notes:

  • This second build is currently better than the first one when it comes to gaming. Around ~70% higher FPS. But this is imbalanced due to the weak CPU.
  • Almost no upgradeability on this one.
  • I would still suggest the first build. This is just to broaden our scope.

2nd Edit: This is my personal entry level rig sweet spot.

Notes:

  • $150 more expensive, but this could be worth it if you could extend the budget to that.
  • i3-8100 + GTX 1060 3gb is the best value combo in my personal opinion.
  • You could play AAA games with this rig for the next 5 years.
  • Upgraded to 16gb RAM. 8gb could be insufficient these days. That's why I chose a single stick in the first build.
  • Upgraded to 3TB HDD. $20 more for 2TB more is quite attractive
