I am getting close to upgrading my old system, and want to double-check options/parts/prices/etc.

My current system:

Component have
Mobo Asus P8P67-M rev.3.0
Chip i7-2600k 3.4Ghz
Video Nvidia GTX960
RAM 2x4GB Corsair
SSD 120GB OCZ agility
HD: 500GB Seagate
optical: inop
case: Thermaltake V3
Power Supply Corsair TX750

keyboard: Logitech G11
mouse: Logitech G500
monitor: Benq RL2455

System is ~7 years old, only replaced the video card.  I can still get by for a bit more if there are reasons for waiting.

System suggested by the local shop:

Component Suggested
Mobo
Chip i7-8700k 3.2Ghz,12MB Cache
Video MSI GTX1060 OC
RAM 2x8GB G.Skill Ripjaw PC4-21300 dual channel
SSD 256GB Intel 760p
HD: 1TB Seagate BarraCuda
optical: depends on case
case:
Power Supply EVGA 600B

Questions:

1) They did not suggesting/include a case option.

    a) I don't want: RGB, liquid cooling.

    b) I do want: QUIET, low dust allowance on the inside (we have pets and a lot of dust), excellent cooling (willing to add some more large/quiet case fans if needed).

    c) I keep my current case on my table, on its side.  I don't want to put it on the floor (my legs need to go there!), so maybe having an option to have the optical mounted rotated 90 degrees?  Looking for ideas here.

    d) can't spend a lot on the case... money is an issue

2) I am willing to move the GTX960 over to save some cash now as I hear late summer might be the best time to pick up something in the 10XX series as the 11XX start to come out.

3) I will admit that I lucked out on my current CPU and hit one of those 'generational change' items and it has lasted forever (in computer part terms).  I would like the new system to also have some longevity as well, if possible.

4) I plan on moving my current SSD and HD over as more storage (shouldn't be an issue for the current HD, hope there isn't an issue with the current boot SSD.

5) While I have saved up/been gifted with a little bit of a build chest, I don't really want to overspend.  The local shop's quote (without case but including Win10) is in the C$1650 range.  Bringing the GTX960 forward saves  C$420 for now.

Thank you for your time reading this long post and I appreciate any help given.

When i think tight budget i think AMD for more for less money. Don't know what currency you have ( canadien or us ) but a 2600 chip from amd with a b350 motherboard would be a very pricey efficient combo. Just make sure you get 3000 - 3200 speed ram and that CPU should easily be good for a few year's. I would keep the 960 until the other gpus come out then go for a 1070 or 1070ti the extra money you can get from selling the 960 should help when that time arrives. As far as case go i use the meshify c for my air cooled build and the Two i made for my sister. Very nice case, not to pricey and great building experience.

How did they plan to cool that 8700k? Because a 2600 from AMD has a way lower tdp.

Here's a example of what 1600$ canadien can get you. If you go us then a few nice additions could be done but this is a solid pc for the next few year's.

If you have a few extra dollars to spend i would upgrade the motherboard and maybe go 2600x over the regular 2600, that upgrade would be 60-80$

If you go 1070 instead of 1070 ti you can drop that bill by near 100$.

Alex:

Yes, C$ = Canadian.

I will admit to having an Intel/Nvidia bias (so many stories over the years of issues/problems for AMD.  I know Intel and Nvidia cost a little more, but throughout the years I haven't had any problems.  Which is a good thing in my opinion.

That case looks like it would be bad for dust / pet hair it looks to be basically solid sides with 'as open as possible; front and back, am I seeing that right?

Also, while I don't plan on overclocking, I always figured having a chip that can support it would raise its longevity chances.  Totally unscientific, but there you go.

Umbranoctuna:

You might be right on the i5... Being a software industry professional, I will admit to always wanting the 'biggest, baddest' and that is probably something I just need to get over.  I briefly considered doing YouTube (glad I didn't now, what with how they are treating their content creators), but have to admit that most of the games I play (and my play style) might be akin to watching paint dry for most viewers.  While I do play some MMOs, I don't do FPS so i5 might be the cost-saving answer.

If you can wait and want to stream Intel will have a new version of the 8700k out very soon with 8 cores... It will most likely cost as much as the 8700k is right now.

I usually try to go with a solid gpu as well, if possible for you i would wait to see what AMD will offer with the 680 series gpu that they spoke in the wanshow. If you absolutely want to stick with nvidia wait also for the new gpus, the pascal gpus will drop in prices and you might be capable to get a 1160 that would most likely perform like a 1080.

As for the case i listed there is dust filters everywhere... Just take them out and clean it ... Takes literally a minute and pet hair won't make it through. My cat sleeps on the case often when i game and it was never a issue. Dust will make it in most cases but if it's not on the floor this case is great. Keep in mind that you need some intake to keep that Intel CPU cool since they are hot.

As for longevity of a CPU it's simple, there's no difference from a overclock capable one and a regular one. Heat is what kills cpus overtime, keep it under control and it a CPU 8600k will last just as long as a 8700k.

Thanks, Alex.  That does look like a good case.  I was bad with my current case... I keep it on the desktop, but on its side (like an old desktop).  I used it as a pedestal for my work monitor/dock.

Regarding new Intel CPUs coming out... that's the biggest problem with putting a system together: there is always some new part just around the corner.  I guess I need to investigate that new chip you mention and I will most likely move my old GPU and wait for the 11XX series to come out and see what happens then.
