File share server

I need somewhere to start on setting up a file share server, to share photos and videos between three to four pcs with the purpose of editing. Any idea on where I can pick up all the information I need to make that possible ?

Plug a 2.5" drive into the back of your router using a USB to SATA adaptor, and go to your router settings and enable the drive to be seen.

 

Otherwise, setup a NAS. I am not sure how it works but I think all devices have to be connected via Ethernet for the file server to show up.

howmuch storage is required and what budget are we talking about?

 

should this be a separate machine running the file server or should it run on one of the PC´s?

I am looking for a definitive guide, not just some tips. In response to TJ I am looking for a reliable server with a lot of space, otherwise there would be no point to my sharing files, thus just hooking up a hard drive won't suffice.
