It's a fan, unless you somehow derp the connection and short it you can't do anything wrong.

Just connect it properly and don't worry about it.

It can in very rare cases cause issues as you are feeding current from the 12v to the 5v line, however the current draw on the 5v from other components should cancel this out anyway.

I've done it before, I had a fans with Molex plugs on them and changed the ground pin from the centre to the outside edge (red 5v rail).

If you already have the cable I'd use it.

The biggest problems with the 7v mod were bad wiring since there were no commercial adaptors and people did it themselves, sometimes badly.

So with the bad cable problem not being an issue you're probably more likely to get struck by lightning than have something go wrong using the adaptor.

As to the cheap eBay controllers, they can be good if you know what your looking for (I just assume everyone does as I'm an electrical engineer student and its second nature to me sorry)

If you still wanted the no risk option you can get a rear PCI bracket with knobs for each fan. It's not pwm but it's $20 and it'll work fine. Link to Amazon.

But personally i'd use the adaptor as you already have it.
