So I currently own the Motorola SBG6580. Don't get me wrong, it's a good modem... but not router.. the WiFi cut's out like 4 times in one hour and sometimes it just straight up doesn't work. Unacceptable.

I'm currently eyeballing a Netgear Nighthawk X4 R7500 AC2350 router on eBay. It's pretty cheap so I'm thinking about picking it up.

A couple questions before I get it, 1, what does the X4 part mean? I've seen theres x4 and x10 and x8 and all that... but what does that mean...? Same goes with the R7500 part. I figured that was just the way of differentiating models. Also same question about the AC2350. I saw an AC2330 too. Same model. Just curious as to what it means.

Second question, I'm keeping the same modem I have now and I just want to add the router to it. There is 4 Ethernet ports on the one I have now. If I shut off the wifi from my Motorola POS, can I come out of one of the Ethernet ports into my Nighthawk and have that work as a router?

And third question, when I picked up the modem/router I have now, I had to call Comcast and have them activate it. Will I have to do that with the new router?

Hope all of this made sense.

*please don't tell me not to get a router off of eBay because I could be scammed blah blah blah... I know what I'm doing there...

Only need to call comcast to activate a modem, not a router.

You will need to change your modem from functioning as a router to a modem otherwise you will be double NATing.

Dont know about the X numbers

Thanks. I appreciate it

Seems to me the X is just brand tiering, similar to i3, i5, i7 etc.  Ones like the X10 support 802.11ad for 60 GHz wifi as well (but are like $450 and offer poor value for the investment).

You should be able to bridge mode the SB6580

You only need to activate the modem component, so it should already be activated since you're using the same device on the modem side.

1) Most likely marketing garbage. I would just say to compare the tech specs. Most likely the X4 should be fine. As its about as fast as your going to get on 5Ghz at least with most router. Most of it is tech specs and features of the firmware. For example my router supports 3G/4G dongles and Dual WAN. So I would venture a guess is the better ones might be slightly faster wireless, keep in mind the speeds of 5Ghz and 2.4 Ghz are added together to the that AC number. Then extra features. My biggest concern would be the malware that seems to be infecting routers, Id make sure that what ever you choose is not on that list as Netgear had some that were.

2) Put the modem in bridge mode, some one linked to it already.

3) Your modem is already provisioned, No need to call Comcast. The only changes that will happen with a new router is you most likely will get a new IP address, besides that nothing really should change internet wise.

OH and buying routers off ebay isnt the issue. Buying modems is, as a vast majority are stolen from ISP's like Comcast. When you go to provision them, Comcast runs it thru the stolen modem list and if its on their list, they ask for the modem back and your out what ever you paid for it.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

So if the modem is in bridged mode, can I still use the Ethernet ports on the back of the modem to send info to the router? And can I use them to send info to the computers connected to the modem?

When the modem is in bridged mode it basically turns of the router portion. So it acts like a standard Cable modem. It will pass the Comcast IP address via one of its Ethernet ports to the new router.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
