Why are you using Server 2016 to play games with in the first place?

Windows Server is optimized for systems with multiple CPU's, normally 2 or more. There is no reason why you should be using Windows Server. Yes, it is ruining performance because servers need to be efficient, and Windows Server does just that. Buy Windows 10 and play games on that.

And are you using any of the 'server' features of it?

You can get Windows 10 for "free" you don't need to activate it. Some features are disabled such as changing the background, etc.

If that's all you are using on it then you may as well just use Windows 10, you are clearly using an OS that is overkill for your needs.

Well, if you don't have money, go into Google and type in "Windows 10 90 day enterprise trial", and enter in your details, download the .iso file, then download Rufus and use it to burn the .iso file to a USB, and install Windows 10 like that. Your going to get frame drops all the time with Windows Server.

I wouldn't recommend Windows 7 as a daily OS anymore since it is becoming less secure and from what I've seen they are slowing down update servers for it (a cheap way of moving people to Windows 10).

Just use Windows 10 unactivated until you have the funds to buy a key for it.

okay thankyou and i dont have a usb laying around at this house is there any software i could use to make a bootable hard drive?

Borrow a USB from a friend. 8GB minimum. As @LinusTechTipsFanFromDarlo said, you can use it unactivated until you buy a key from a site like eBay for around $5 - $10 USD.

Also to be clear he didn’t really give you a copy for free...

server OSEs are not transferable so he can’t give it to you. What you are actually running is an unlicensed copy, just one hat activated (activation doesn’t check legality of licenses)
