Hey everyone,

I'm having a really odd problem in windows 8 pro x64, no sound.

Running a Asus Maximus iv extreme (Realtek ALC 889 onboard adapter)

After upgrading from windows 7 everything was fine until i tried to change my playback device (from optical to headphone jack), It won't let me select a different default device.

Everything looked fine in device manager, ran the troubleshoot program and it said the device is disabled and can't be enabled. So i uninstalled the sound drivers rebooted and reinstalled them. Same result only this time no audio works. I can't select any input device because input manager it says they're disabled. In device manager it says they're fine.

Tried disabling them in device manger rebooting reenabling them and rebooting, again same result.

I tried disabling on board audio in the bios then booted to windows uninstalled the drivers. Enabled in bios, reinstalled drivers and same result.

I'm about to try a clean install, just wondering if anyone else has had or herd of this. I have searched on google but most things say just to reinstall the drivers.

Never once did I have issues like this in windows 7. Is windows 8 really worth the effort?

OK so i uninstalled drivers, ran windows update. It found nothing lol, said no new updates found.

Reinstalled from download again and everything looks fine like it should work but there is no sound and i can't change my default device.

If i try a test sound from the speaker setup menu it says: Failed to play test tone

Well I can't seam to find another person with your issue. I would send a support ticket to ASUS, as they marked the motherboard Windows 8 ready. Be sure to add everything you tried in bullet points to avoid being told to do the same things, include all links of where you downloaded too.

It could be that the motherboard onboard sound is broken, and a RMA might be needed.

You can try and reinstall Windows 8 if you think something went wrong with the installation (maybe corrupted download, if you purchased Windows 8 online?!)

If you dont' want to pass through all of this, check out ASUS Xonar dedicated sound card. At least you'll get better sound via analogue, if you use analogue inputs, if not, it will be probably the same.

Ya I'm going to try a clean install of windows 8, I have a disc here. If it doesn't work then i'll try a clean install of windows 7. If that still doesn't work then i'll contact asus.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. :)

I may not get to that for a few days, but when I do I will post back with an update.
