ok, so right now ive got an FX-6100 @4.2Ghz with dual 7770's in crossfire, but im looking to upgrade to a single gpu with better performance, so far ive looked at the 7870, and 7870 XT since its pretty much a 7950 for $50 cheaper, id go nvidia if the performance is better for the same price, any suggestions would be appreciated

Yep, the Tahiti LE, aka HD7870 XT, is the best bang for buck in my neck of the woods. Priced similarly to a GTX660 Ti but with the two AAA game bundle, it's a no brainer. Be aware though, since it uses the Tahiti core, it is more power hungry and draws about the same amount of power as a HD7950, and I've been told, it equals the power draw of a HD7970 at times. So, be sure to have a PSU that can handle it.......

Who says the bundle is over? Newegg still has the bundle, though the Sapphire HD7870 XT is out of stock atm, should come with TR and Bioshock Infinite. I have both games and they are excellent! Just FYI, BF4 is rumored to be bundled with AMD cards in the future....

Hello, All.

I actually had much the same question though I didn't want to start a new thread just for me. I'm rebuilding part of my PC and looking to upgrade at least my graphics card to something a bit more modern but I don't really have the means to pay out the nose at the moment.

My Specs:

P5Q-Deluxe

Intel Core2Duo E8400 3GHz.

8GB DDR 2 G,SKILL

Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 1000W (soon to have)

Cooler Master HAF XB

H100 in either push or pull when I get it.

HIS HD 3870 512MB

As you can see by the graphics card, it's quite aged. As for games I play, I would have to say World of Warcraft, the witcher series of games, looking to play the new bioshock on at least reasonable detail to make it look good, better than console hopefully, etc.

If I'm missing any info, please let me know.

Thanks a lot, guys (and gals). Heard a lot of great things about this forum and knew I could count on this community!

Thanks again,

Chris W.

I have an extremely similar build with an E8400 + an HD 4870 (used to have an 8800 GT which is equivalent to the 3870 but that card died).

I would highly suggest doing a platform upgrade, give me your budget and I will try to help you out with the best bang for buck upgrade .

Well, most of my budget has gone to my new case, power supply and cooler. I knew that I had no chance what so ever on building a new rig at this very moment but because of disability reasons, I wanted to go from my thermaltake Armor+ to something far smaller like the haf xb. anyways. In terms of budget, I could maybe got as high as $200-250 including tax and shipping. I would like to buy from NCIX as that's a very trusted place for me so anything there that you think would be good and would live a very long life like my 3870, I'd be very happy. I'm not too worried about bottle necks just as long as it doesn't cave performance even lower as I will be upgrading the system when I have the means. I hope this is easily understood, I'm kinda tired. lol.

Just as a side note, I have been looking at the HD 7850 and 7870's as well as the GeForce 650 Ti boost though I'm not sure how nicely the GeForce will play with my current motherboard, It's an Crossfire only motherboard thus I would assume it likes AMD/ATI more than nVidia. Am I wrong in thinking there would be complications? This was just a thought that came to mind while I waited. Thanks again.

The best bang for buck card out there right now is without a doubt the 7870 Tahiti LE, it's as fast as the 660 Ti and costs 50$ less .

Just out of curiosity, What do you guys think about a 7770/7790 or 7850? Those, much like the 650Ti Boost would be more in my price range. Any thoughts on that? Again, thank you for all of your help and epic fast replies thus far. I look forward to being a part of this community as well as giving help just as you have given me.

I've seen some good non reference GTX 660s lately for 200$, if you can snag one at that price it would be better than an HD 7850.

the "crossfire only" just means that the second x16 is only an x4, SLI needs minimum an x8 slot, i can run 3 way crossfire but only 2 way SLI, it shouldn't have a problem with nvidia, and just so you know, it has nothing to do with dual gpu cards, only dual card configs, so a 690 or 7990 will work fine. but if your going nvidia, id suggest a 660, all the 650ti boost is just a 2GB slightly faster 650ti, which competes with the 7770, so go the 7870 if you can, or the Tahiti LE version. but the 7850 is still a great choice.

if your planning to get an upgrade soon on your cpu, than a 7870 (XT) or 7950 would be great, if not get a 7850 as it won't be as bottle necked by your cpu
