12GB of Ram vs 16GB

So I currently have 8gb of ram and 2 available ram slots, well i'm in need of an upgrade and was wondering if just get a 2x2 kit with same specs as mine would be a good upgrade, or just getting a another 4x2 kit, I would save money the other way but how much of a performance difference is there?

There wouldn't be a performance loss, but you would lose 4Gb of RAM.

Honestly, I would just go for the 16Gb.

Just realized they don't make 4gb kits, but they make 4gb sticks, I could run in single channel but ik it's just going to hold back performance, i'll just get another 8gb kit

I believe with 4 ram sticks, you would run single channel for every stick regardless of capacity.

Don't quote me on that, I could be wrong.

Someone here probably knows more than me.

Dual channel with 4 sticks should work fine.

Provided you don't run into compatibility issues from mixing different memory, anyway.

I heard ryzen doesn't like it and has compatible issues even if you buy the exact same kit sometimes, thinking about just selling my current ram and buying a 16gb kit

Ah, yes Ryzen is pretty picky about memory, at least 1st gen Ryzen. It can run dual channel with 4 sticks, but it might need low memory speeds. It might be better to just buy a 16GB kit and sell the 8GB kit.

yeah i have a 1700x and my 2400mhz ram isn't cutting it either, will most likely go for some 3000mhz kits

That sounds pretty good.

(but then I have to say that, since I have a 2700X and 16 gigs of DDR4-3000 :P)
