Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my gaming/streaming PC since I can't really play with the performance I like (which is not that demanding) and stream at the same time. For example if I play Overwatch at medium/high graphics at a realiable 150FPS, when I'm streaming I get maybe 80FPS or less, which is a problem.

I think my CPU is causing a bottleneck but I'd like smarter people than me to agree with this idea.

Here are my PC specs:

- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5

- CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K Processor 3.5 LGA 1150 BX80646I54690K

- GPU: Gigabyte GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD GeForce GTX 970 G1, 4GB GDDR5 PCI Express

- Power SupplyEVGA SuperNOVA 750 B1

- RAM: (2x) Kingston HyperX Fury 4 GB (1866 MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL10 DIMM)

- Storage: 1TB HDD, 250gb SSD

I don't think RAM is the problem but I'm planning to upgrade that too. Please let me know if I'm horribly mistaken and I only need to upgrade my RAM.

Now, to be honest I have no idea what to look for in a CPU. I only know I should aim at an i7 now... I think? What's a good upgrade?

Thanks for reading :)

I'd get ryzen honestly.  You might want intel, but streaming the i5 isn't worth it over the 1600/2600/1700 at a similar price. Your gpu can probably make it 1 more generation, but that might have to be upgraded soon too. What's your budget? Btw ram is a huge issue, 4gb is not enough to stream at 720p 30fps, but you should just get a new system.

You should definitely get more RAM (8GB, 16GB if possible). If you're streaming, you'd be better off getting Ryzen due to lower price per core than Intel's Coffee Lake series.

You also have the option to use your old parts as a separate streaming PC (if you do decide to upgrade). RAM shouldn't be that much of an issue on a separate streaming system, so all you'd really need to buy is another PSU and a small SSD/HDD. I'd suggest you do this since there's virtually no FPS drop when using another PC for encoding the stream. (EDIT: unless your PCs are not running on Ethernet)

@t4ilsThanks for your answer. I'm going 16gb then. What's the best Ryzen and Intel processor that's compatible with my MOBO so I can compare them?

@hconverse02Thanks for your answer. My budget is pretty much enough for upgrading to 16gb RAM which I am, and getting the best CPU my MOBO can handle. What would be a good Intel and Ryzen CPU so I can compare them?

You need more RAM and a new cpu. I'd save and just get a new build, personally. But upgrading to z370 (i5 8600k) and ddr4 will help you out massively.

@RollTime Thanks for your answer. I'm getting 16gb RAM DDR3 since I don't think my MOBO can handle DDR4. I won't be able to save and get a new build for a while since I'm going to college soon. How can I know if my motherboard can handle the i5 8600k you're suggesting?

No. Nnononononono.  You have to upgrade your cpu/mobo/ram if you want a new chipset.  What is your budget?

I'd HIGHLY suggest you'd upgrade to a new chipset, meaning upgrading your motherboard and RAM as well. The best you can get on LGA 1150 (iirc) is the i7 4790k which doesn't make that big of a difference compared to your current CPU.

I would sell the i5, Mobo, and RAM, and buy a Ryzen 1700/2700 and 16GB of RAM. You could also upgrade your GPU depending on budget and resolution/framerates

From what the community here was telling me in my thread, the Ryzen 5 2600 or even 1600 slightly OCed would game and stream fine.

A Ryzen 5 2600 goes for under $200 USD

You can find a x470 mobo for around $140

and 16gb of DDR4 3200hz memory, which is what the suggested you use for a ryzen build, for around $170

Is your motherboard using the z370 chipset?

it's time
