depends on how much 3d rendering you will be doing? if its just occasional, then probably could drop down. But if its the primary focus of the machine over gaming, then its worth it IMO for the work load.

In school now working on my BS in computer science with my focus on graphic design so right now it's just occasional but I'm thinking about once I finish school. Do you think the 2700x would handle well?

Yes the 2700x will be able to handle it will. It will be slower, but I think will perform just fine as a starting build to get your feet wet in the world of graphic design. Once you start growing your client list and earning money, then I would look at building higher end. For now a 2700x and 1080 will be just fine.

Planning a rebuild for my workstation/game Station. Needs to be able to 3d render/edit photos and videos (light room/photoshop) /and game. Is this overkill? Should I go with the am4 2700x and a non ti 1080?

We can amend it in 2018 to include "or have too powerful a computer"

I would counsel against the OP build. School work is about learning, not about producing commercial output. A good system is needed, but don't plan on using it for professional work much beyond graduation. By that time tech will have advanced significantly and interests will be more focused.

Consider something along the lines of a Ryzen 7 or Coffeelake i7. Either platform should provide more than enough power.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

If the software you are using can't take advantage of all those cores/threads then it is overkill. Have a look at sites such as puget systems as they do guides for hardware recommendations.

Great site, I am a wedding photographer so I do a lot of editing with photoshop and light room as well as video editing in premiere

Yeah that's my issue now I can't decide, I was originally going with the ryzen 7 2700x but worried after I get it I will be disappointed and wish I would've gotten the 1950x. As I am not a typical student I am 36 with 2 kids a wife and I am a professional photographer as well as videographer for weddings. I also dabble in graphic design while in school, So would the 16 cores suite me better over 8?
