970 not booting

xenic

I have a MSI 970 4G lying around from my brothers old pc.

I decided to test it before selling it. But when I boot the system this happens:

- gpu fans start spinning

- 2 longs beep codes from my motherboard

- gpu fans stop spinning

- no post on screen

After looking up the Beep Codes, it says:

"Video error (no add-in graphics card installed)"

  • Reseat add-in graphics card.
  • Make sure a compatible processor is installed.

I'm fairly certain the card is properly installed.

Tried it in another pc, same result, no post.

Is it dead? I know for a fact that it worked 2 weeks ago.

system specs:

intel dp67de

i7-2600k

Check that it is properly plugged in (power wise), maybe try to clean the connectors or slotting it in another PCIe.

For the fan spin, mine does it, it's in its boot up routine. There are leds on mine to tell if it is recieving proper power from the PSU

Did you go to BIOs make sure that it can enable it's self? And do you have Nvidia driver's installed?

I'm interested in knowing how you can tell if it works in the BIOS if it doesn't display anything on the screen.

Not having drivers installed wouldn't make it impossible for a PC to boot.

I don't think the BIOS will detect the GPU and tell you if it's working or not.

Either way, the card is what's stopping the PC from booting, even just to the BIOS.

Not to be rude or anything, but this is fairly basic knowledge.

I wouldn't, honestly.

If the card won't let the PC boot, then it's just dead and that's that.

And, it's also not how you do a reflow either.  With a reflow, you use liquid flux and a heat gun or another tool that is designed to heat the parts properly.  Using an oven is more likely to damage the card further.  Even if you got lucky, and did a reflow in the most ghetto way possible, you still damaged the card more shortening the life of it further.  This is what Louis Rossman freaked out on Linus for.

I didn't suggest doing a reflow.

All I said was if the card is dead, then I'd just leave it. Obviously, that's not how to do a reflow as there isn't really anything that gets done.

I know, I was agreeing with you and explaining why.

It didn't sound like that. Oh well, now I know how to do a reflow properly :)

Some motherboards are not happy unless you set the bios for it before installing it. Set the bios to to display pcie first and then reboot the system and install the gpu. It should boot then..
