GPU Usage lowers as framerate decreases

Opencircuit74

Hello,

I was playing some games recently (Fortnite and SimCity 2013) and I saw that when the parts when I needed the frames the most, the GPU usage went down to around 50%. I have a Ryzen 5 1400@3.95GHz, a GTX 970@1527MHz, (3954MHz on memory), and 8GB of DDR4-2400. This does not seem to pose an issue in other games such as CS:GO and Star Wars Battlefront. I have attached pictures of the usage during Fortnite (the end part is when I got off to post this). If anyone knows how to increase the FPS of these games it would be greatly appreciated, as <40FPS should really never happen. Thanks!

Can you get your CPU temps?

The temps are mid-50s, I'm using a 240AIO.

Something else it prolly holding it back. Gpu usage is low the entire time. Need to see how the rest of the system is holding up.

Can you get the same graphs on the games you say you have no issue with?

Main RIg Corsair Air 540, I7 9900k, ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero, G.Skill Ripjaws 3600 32GB, 3090FE, EVGA 1000G5, Acer Nitro XZ3 2560 x 1440@240hz

Spare RIg Lian Li O11 AIR MINI, I7 4790K, Asus Maximus VI Extreme, G.Skill Ares 2400 32Gb, EVGA 1080ti, 1080sc 1070sc & 1060 SSC, EVGA 850GA, Acer KG251Q 1920x1080@240hz

Here is me playing Star Wars Battlefront:

And Rocket League:

Rocket League GPU usage may be low because of the 144fps frame cap.

you could be running out of ram use task manager to see your ram usage, it could just be hitting the ram limit and everything grinding to a halt

SC 2013 (any SC game really) grinds to a halt regardless.  The sim part is single threaded and performance tanks once a city grows large enough.

For Fortnite, memory could be a problem.

I don't think so, my GPU is using 2.5/4GB, while the system is using about 6.5/8GB. It may be because of my RAM speed or something (remember, this is single-channel 2400)

I know this is an old thread, but it happens with cs:go and guns if Icarus online as well. It didn’t before for cs:go, but it does now, and I have no idea why. I get 60-70 FPS with 30% GPU Usage. Any ideas?

Its not a "ram" thing, it a "the calculations are too complex and poorly optimized" thing.
