Threads?

What does threads generally mean and what they do?

Nowadays, 6-core processor is main stream of i7, i5, Ryzen and FX, but some of them are without Hyper-Threading/SMT.

Can anyone here explain to me how these actually works?

(Like will this affect the clock speed under load or will they affect how much things the CPU can handle)
