Micro Consoles

Hello, for father's day this year I thought it would be a great idea to buy my dad a micro console with a large array of retro games from his youth. He has often shown me posts on Facebook concerning the NES/SNES Classic Editions. Unfortunately the systems made by Nintendo don't support that many games and they are quite pricey. Does anyone have any information on the micro console options other than the Nintendo ones? Maybe there are third party companies making quality products that are a better option. Any other information would be greatly appreciated too, I'd like to learn what I can about these systems before buying one.
