I have just upgraded my system from an FX-8370 to a Ryzen 1700 with a Strix x370-f mobo. I had 32 GB of 2400 DDR4 (4 8GB sticks) RAM laying around from some server upgrades I did for work that i am currently using in the system. My question is do you think it would be worth it to replaced the 32GB of 2400 RAM with like 16GB of faster RAM.

I use this machine mostly for gaming and web browsing but about 5-6 times a month I do a bit of video work and heavy database work.

Thank you for your opinions.

If you're willing to go through the hassle of buying new RAM, potentially selling the old ones for the money, then it's worth it. Otherwise, no.

You might want to check whether these sticks work with Ryzen first. If they dont, your question is no longer a question.

I would try to overclock the sticks you have on hand to 2933 MHz (with 16 or less latency).

If they are stable at 1.35v, I would not do it.

If it was Intel I would keep, but Ryzen works better with higher speed ram which I assume you know, I would use these sticks until someone wants to buy them then switch to something faster

They do work. I have them in and running right now.

They will overclock to 2666 stable at 1.35v. They are Dell enterprise registered ECC sticks so they can not do much past their rating without doing weird things. I think ill stick with them for a while. I don't think the benefit would really be worth the price of replacing them in the current market.

You're potentially leaving 10 - 15% performance behind for gaming with 2666 compared to say, low latency 3200/3466 kits. Ryzen does do a lot better for gaming with faster memory.

That's assuming you have a GPU fast enough to take advantage, so a GTX 1070 at the very least. Anything from a GTX 1060 (or RX 580) and below, you'll see no difference as games will be GPU bound.

Sounds good enough to me. I would stick with them.
