Hey Y'all, got a fun one for you.

I recently upgraded my EVGA 650W PSU to a Corsair 850W unit, mostly for aesthetics but also because I needed the other psu for a second build I'm working on, and now I'm having some issues.

THe primary issue I've noticed is that every once in a while, one in three I'd guess, the computer will post but then tell me to go back into the BIOS to select the correct boot drive and doing this will show that the BIOS doesn't see my m.2 SSD with Windows on it, just the SATA HDD I use for storage.  This alone I can generally get past by restarting the computer again, I even tried removing and reseating the m.2 just in case I'd jostled it, but it's still inconsistent.

The other issue I've found is that when I can boot into windows I can't use the start menu, most anything that I'd ascribe to the "System" process freezes up when I try to use it.  After that happens I either have to let my computer slowly descend into stuttering and an eventual BSOD for "Critical_Process_Died" or restart and risk the system not seeing the m.2 again.

So far I've tried:

  • unplugging and reconnecting all my power cables
  • power cycling the machine
  • reconnecting the m.2

And once I get home I intend to try clearing the CMOS.

Anybody else got any suggestions?  My concern is that something is getting shorted(I even lost one of the tiny m.2 screws at one point, I'm still looking for it) and the last thing I want is to damage my SSD.

Thanks!

I had a similar problem years and years ago on an old Mushkin SSD and turns out it was the firmware on the drive. I would see if you can get an updated firmware for the controller on the SSD and see if that helps. Also, would look and ensure your BIOS is up to date as that can affect stability for SSDs as well.

Ok, I'll look into that for my next step, thanks.  Would that firmware be something I could find on the manufacturer site?  Any idea why this started being an issue when I changed out my PSU?

honestly not sure why a PSU change would affect it since its an NVMe drive so it requires no physical cables and pulls it from the motherboard power.

That's what I was wondering lol.  And oddly enough the SATA drive I have still works 100% despite the fact that I had to replace the power cable for that so....shits wack I guess

If it has problems recognizing the SSD, you better make a Backup because the drive is dying.

Had the same shit with my Crucial MX100 drive wich died a couple of days later...

Yo, you for real?  Because I did just try to clear the CMOS and it did the same start menu fuckery then wasn't seen in the bios when I restarted.
I mean, this is a simple fix, but I was hoping for something less expensive.  That's also the exact same drive I have I think, I know its a crucial m.2

Sadly yes.

What I had was the SSD not recognized at first boot, Reset and it was recognized.

A couple of days or weeks later (I don't use my Gaming PC much) the SSD was dead.

As was my motherboard...

run chkdsk on the SSD and try booting without the HDD, force the system to boot from the m.2 slot.

And if that m.2 is Samsung do a backup before running chkdsk because the command itself might corrupt the partition table beyond recovery, I've seen it, twice, and both drives were less than 6 months old.

God I hope this doesn't brick my motherboard, I just upgraded that less than a year ago.  Thanks for the tip bro.

When did this issue show up for you?  No chance it was after you changed the power supply?

starting command prompt in administrator mode causes windows to lock up on the UAC alert, I can't make it run.  If I just wait a minute on that screen it gives the CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED bsod

No, it just showed up sometime after that, out of nowhere...

And what 850W Corsair are you talking about?

Its an RM850x, the white body and cables matched my build and I needed a second psu anyway so I just upgraded my main build with it.

ah, thought as much.

So its a decent PSU, so the probability that its the cause is rather low...

Start Windows in safe mode (F8 key right after POST for Win7, Shift+Restart for 10) and login using the Administrator account, run chkdsk C: /b /f /r from there (it will prompt you for a restart)

I'll give that a shot next once I'm home from work, hadn't thought about using safe mode.  I'm still picking up a new m.2 drive just in case, but if I can save this one I'll be pretty happy.

We dumb, even in safe mode I wasn't gonna be able to chkdsk /f to fix the issues since it's my boot drive.  RIP me I guess
