Ryzen 2700X temperature (reporting) issues

Go to solution Solved by Skiiwee29,

BIOS idle is always wonky. Mine for my 1800x says about 65c all the time, yet in windows 65c is the max I ever go under full load lol. This seems very much to be a bug, likely since its a brand new chip and likely not built into the code of the OS yet.

Hi,

I've assembled my new computer a few days ago and I have some problems regarding temperature which I cannot solve.

Whenever I'm in the BIOS the reported temperature is about ~45°C, which I think is already pretty high for idling around.

However when the operating system is fully loaded and there are no open applications, the temperature reported is around 94°C and sometimes spikes up 105°C.

(See picture attached)

Now I'm uncertain whether I did something wrong during assembly, the program I'm using is reporting the wrong temperature, or some hardware is defect.

Could you provide me some advice?

Specs (Hardware):

  • Motherboard: Asus Prime x470 Pro (BIOS Version 4008)
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 2700X
  • Radiator: Wraith Prism
  • PSU: be quie! Pure Power 10 600W

Specs (Software):

  • Operating System: Debian Buster (Testing, 64 Bit)
  • Kernel: 4.15.0-3-amd64

P.S.: I stumbled across this post, however I cannot check temperatures with Ryzen Master as I don't have any Windows operating system installed.

Thanks for your reply. It appears that you are right. As stated in following article this problem seems to be know.

Hopefully there will be a patch soon. Actually I wanted to stress test my system but without any way of determining the CPUs temperature that's not gonna fly.
Also I'm afraid of my computer suddenly bursting into flames xD:(

AMD added the Zen CPU temperature reporting to the Linux kernel last year after the launch of the original Ryzen CPUs, but while there are reported values for these new CPUs, they are incorrect. Under idle, the temperatures were basically reported as 95~100 Celsius, which is obviously inaccurate.

well if you are only getting reported 45c in the BIOS on the latest BIOS, then you should be good.
