Nas on the Cheap

LovesLaus

Hey,

i not sure if this belongs in this group.

i trying to build a nas, but i have not clue what to build it with. my budget is around 200-300, not including hard drives. i am trying to keep the NAS small as well. i found a small case that seemed to fit the size department, but just a little expensive, Lian Li pc q 25b.

if anyone have a suggestions please let know.

thank you

With a budget like that, it might be better to get yourself a pre-made NAS enclosure.

you don't need power for a NAS, I would recommend basically getting the cheapest stuff possible (that is still reliable). Maybe a motherboard/CPU/VGA combo.   It might be a good idea to get separate NIC though. I don't have personal experience, but cheap motherboard nics supposedly can slow transfer speeds-which is pretty important in a NAS.

ummm, maybe more than 2GB of ram? windows at least takes up the better part of 2GB, idk about FreeNAS or ubuntu.

Please do BOINC. no matter how small a contribution it can make a difference.

Have you checked out the Fractal Design Node 304? It's around a similar size, if not shorter, than the Lian Li you've picked out, and yet still accommodates 6 hard drives of the 3.5 inch variety, and has plenty of room left over for 2.5 inch SSD's to be velcro'd down. It's a wee bit more inexpensive, albeit without those sexy Hot Swap drive bays... which, the more you think about it, can come in handy should you be running the thing in a RAID 1+0 configuration for swapping out failed drives.
