CPU Questions...

So I'm planning to build a gaming PC, at a budget of MAX 900, preferably less.

I'm planning to use it as a general use PC (so I'm keeping it for a few years), with plenty of 1080p gaming, but a bit of video editing and rendering as well.

Also, the cpu will probably be paired up with a 1060 6GB, or a 1070 if prices have dropped by the summer, and I can earn some more cashshsh AND it's not bottlenecked  by the CPU.

Point is, I'm not sure which cpu to get, and I've got a few questions:

Firstly, I heard that you can actually use Coffee Lake CPU's on Z270 Motherboards, and seeing that Z370 is kinda expensive, I was wondering if there's a trade off, how it works...?

Furthermore, I was confused as to if the Ryzen 2600 is overclockable?

Anyway the CPu's I have in mind are:

Intel i3 8350k

Intel i5 8400

AMD Ryzen 2600 (x)

AMD Ryzen 1600 (x)

Intel i5 8600k (Although I feel it's overkill/ too expensive with a z370 mobo, could get it if i get extra cash instead of 1070)

I know it's a lot of questions, thank you in advance!

1. GTX 1070 would be a nice choice over GTX 1060 if you intend 50% load for gaming and 50% for rendering and editing.

2. Z270 coffee lake compatibility depends on the mobo manufacturer and their bios updates... I would recommend using Z370 mobo to be confident and be sure about the experience.

3. Yes it is(Ryzen 2600)

4. i5 8400 is advisable over other CPUs including the 8600k because the difference will not be significant as well you could buy a better GPU like the 1070 for better bang for the buck.

Hope it would clear your doubts.. peace out.

One just go Z370, Making Coffee lake to work on a Z270 board requires modding and a Z270 compatible CPU. Id just go for the 2600X personally

Primary Laptop (Gearsy MK4): Ryzen 9 5900HX, Radeon RX 6800M, Radeon Vega 8 Mobile, 24 GB DDR4 2400 Mhz, 512 GB SSD+1TB SSD, 15.6 in 300 Hz IPS display

2021 Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition

Secondary Laptop (Uni MK2): Ryzen 7 5800HS, Nvidia GTX 1650, Radeon Vega 8 Mobile, 16 GB DDR4 3200 Mhz, 512 GB SSD

2021 Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

Meme Machine (Uni MK1): Shintel Core i5 7200U, Nvidia GT 940MX, 24 GB DDR4 2133 Mhz, 256 GB SSD+500GB HDD, 15.6 in TN Display

2016 Acer Aspire E5 575

Retired Laptop (Gearsy MK2): Ryzen 5 2500U, Radeon Vega 8 Mobile, 12 GB 2400 Mhz DDR4, 256 GB NVME SSD, 15.6" 1080p IPS Touchscreen

2017 HP Envy X360 15z (Ryzen)

PC (Gearsy): A6 3650, HD 6530D , 8 GB 1600 Mhz Kingston DDR3, Some Random Mobo Lol, EVGA 450W BT PSU, Stock Cooler, 128 GB Kingston SSD, 1 TB WD Blue 7200 RPM

HP P7 1234 (Yes It's Actually Called That)  RIP

Also im happy to answer any Ryzen Mobile questions if anyone is interested!

you can mod a z270 bios to run a 8th gen cpu. however you should not as it is super janky and asking fro problems. for what you are wanting to do the 2600 would be your best bet budget and performance wise. you will see about a 10% decrease in frame rates over intel, however you should still be well into the 90's or 100's fps in most games. for editing and rendering the extra cores and treads will walk circles around the lower thread count intel chips.

Getting a Coffee Lake CPU to work on a non 300 series chipset is a gamble at best. It's best not to consider it. Besides, unless you need the I/O, the Z series boards aren't worth considering with a locked CPU and the rest of the lineup (H310, B350, Q/H370 or whatever) has finally been released so the price may be cheaper for a decent board.

It depends on the motherboard you want. Getting an X or B series board should allow for overclocking.

The Ryzen 2600 is probably the best bet here. But the i5-8400 is a great alternative too.
