So im thinking about getting a ryzen 5 1600 and switching over from intel. However. I dont know too much about them and would appreciate some insight. I've heard ryzen cpu performance depends heavily on exactly what motherboard you have as well as what speed your RAM can run at. I'm looking for cheap motherboards and fairly cheap ddr4 ram. I want my cpu to perform well. Can anyone explain to me exactly how this works with AMD cpu's?

Are you going with the 1600 because the Ryzen 2 (Zen+) chips are out, or because you didn't know the new chips are out?  If you didn't know, I'd recommend going with the Ryzen 5 2600.

So I know the new chips are out, its just that from what I've heard, there isn't a huge difference. and if theres not really a big difference, I can get the 1600 alot cheaper than the 2600 currently.

Motherboard doesn't effect the speed really, there's just the ability to overclock higher on a board with better power delivery.

RAM speed does have an effect on overall system performance, more than on the Intel side. Just check that the particular RAM you want to buy is compatible with Ryzen, you don't need the most expensive sticks, but faster is better.

On Ryzen 2 the compatibility is less of a concern apparently.

Does you mum know you're here?

Not really, RAM speed mattering depends on the applications you're running

But what's your budget/country current GPU and monitor resolution/refresh rate?

And what do you use your PC for?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

In many reviews of the current state of Ryzen 2xxx, the difference in performance is unimpressive. In tests between 1600/1700 and their 2600/2700 counterparts, they perform almost identically in real world application. The biggest change is in single threaded performance. The likely cause of this is the immaturity of the new chips. It took quite a while for the 1k series of Ryzen to get where they are in performance and it's likely to be the same with Ryzen 2k (please note I am not calling this Ryzen 2...thats not out yet).

Does it make sense to get Ryzen 1k still? Sure, they perform admirably now and will for a while yet. That and their price to performance with the ability to overclock quite well is very attractive. Should you still get a Ryzen 2k with the ambition that it will develop better performance over time? Absolutely. The better performance they give now over Ryzen 1k will only improve as support is handled more carefully this time around

Unless you are planning to update your GPU soon, a 1600 (overclocked) is probably better value than a 2600 right now, especially since the 2600 comes with a crappy stock HSF (Wraith Stealth) whereas the 1600 comes with the bigger Wraith Spire, so ultimately both will get 3.8 - 3.9GHz with their supplied coolers. I think the 1600 is about $50 cheaper at the moment, so that makes it the better value.
