Yesterday I was sitting around when I heard my hard drive randomly disconnect. It hasn't been recognized by the computer since then, even though it is plugged in and spinning. It doesn't show up anywhere, disk management/partitions, nothing. Tried to run a chkdsk on it but I "cannot open for direct access." Have tried to use the hard drive on multiple computers, still nothing. Its only a couple of months old, but is it possible that its gone burger?

replug in the connectors

try it on a different pc

visually inspect the wires

try different cables data/pwr

try a different connection locations.

Sorry, forgot to mention it is an external drive, and lost power due to a usb power saving cut (reason for failure).

If it's not showing up in disk management, that's definitely not a good sign.  That said, just losing power should definitely not have caused that unless it was already close to death anyway and very fragile.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

Unfortunately this has happened more than once before, even though the power saving options have been disabled. It probably was on it's deathbed.

Edit: Was able to run chkdsk and recover the drive both times beforehand.

Yikes ok ill give it a go

That's a good suggestion actually.  I've had an enclosure die in the past when the drive inside was fine.  That was a DIY enclosure though, where you put your own drive in.  If yours is a "premade", this might not work.

Yeah, Ive noticed some newer external drives have a different interface board on the drive with only USB I/O.

I've heard (even from quite a few years ago) that they typically have hardware encryption so if the enclosure goes, the data will be gone.  Though, if all you care about is the drive itself, in theory you could format it and continue using it.

Yeah, no SATA on this one unfortunately as it is a premade WD drive. Riperroni. The data on the drive is the only thing i care about, as it is full of banking backups and the sorts. Is getting back my data out of the question?

definitely not, but at this point I think the only way to do it would be pay someone like driversavers or another professional recovery service
