Budget gaming rig (case, storage & peripherals excluded)

raren

Hello

1. Budget & Location

I am thinking about 500 -750 EUR. I live in EU. I already have a 5y old case and few SSDs from dissembled laptops so no storage nor case needed.

2. Aim

I play mostly world of tanks, I want to try Frostpunk or similar non-AAA games. World of tanks is quite demanding after v.1.0 was released and my 675M even without those pesky bugs was not enough.

3. Monitors

I have one 1080p monitor. Someday maybe I will buy second one.

4. Peripherals

None needed.

5. Why are you upgrading?

My Alienware m17x R4 with GTX 675M is slowly dying, I am having constant "The Nvidia Geforce GTX 675M device is not removable and cannot be ejected or unplugged." which annoys me greatly. I am looking for cheap gaming build but I know nothing about recent hardware. The last build I did was on Radeon 4850 long time ago.

Eyy I've got a Radeon 4850 sitting in my basement. How big is your case? Will it hold a fullsize ATX motherboard?

Nothing in particular can I recommend for it to be perfect for you but I would recommend something with a 1060 with 3 (preferably 4 or more) GB of DRAM. A couple of ideas to cut cost, use last-gem RAM and an almost top of the line CPU if upgradability is your issue. Past that, AMD CPUs are cheaper than intel ones for performance dollar, and something like a Ryzen 5 or an intel i5 is the best bank for the buck from each major cpu manufacture.

You'll want to upgrade to Windows 10. Anything later than 6th Gen Intel has no native support for Windows 7 and it's a real pain to get set up on a more modern platform such as Ryzen.

@Crunchy Dragon I checked the Memory QVL for this mobo and it looks like proposed memory is not supported. Any memory above 2800 MHz needs OC on this board.

Any hints?

It'll run in your board, just not at 3000Mhz without an OC.

Last 20 hours I have been mostly reading on what is new in todays computing world with few hours of sleep and this is what I came by:

@Crunchy Dragon @Dah budget gamer666

I upped the budget a bit and switched to Ryzen 5 1600, 6GB 1060 (aorus is best availability in nearby store) and memory (picked this one because it is listed on mobo QVL capable of running at 3GHz - I read Ryzens are particulary impacted by memory clock). What do you think about this setup?
