Possibly useful information:

OS: Windows 7

Soundcard: Xonar D1

Problem:

I'm currently running into a problem with my computer volume controls. Basically if I increase or decrease the volume on my computer all of the sound goes from both ears to only my right ear. As far as I'm aware it doesn't actually change the volume of the right ear, so if I put up the volume full blast the volume in my right ear remains the same, but I can now hear sound through both my left and right ear (the volume in my right ear remains at full blast the entire time). If I turn the volume down to zero the volume in my right ear remains the same, but my left ear has no volume. If I plug my headphones into my front panel audio both ears are at full blast regardless of volume setting.

I have tested:

restarting my computer multiple times. With and without headphones plugged in

2 different headphones

different programs such as VLC media player, Guild Wars 2, and videos on Google Chrome

What I think the problem is:

When I open up a program such as VLC media player, it doesn't appear in the Windows volume mixer under any of the audio options.

So, the problem has to deal with that somehow. Does anyone have a possible solution or suggestion? Also, thank you for taking the time to read my post :)

Do check this first, but these issues interest me:

Is Dolby headphone turned on?

Which port on the back of your D1 are your headphones plugged into. I thought the D1 was a 7.1 card? None of the 1/8" jacks on it are for headphones. You could use the front channel I suppose, but if you've got it plugged into the side channel it'll be coming out of only one ear, sure.

>If I plug my headphones into my front panel audio both ears are at full blast regardless of volume setting.

You're probably not adjusting the correct volume control for the front panel then. Check your sound properties and look for the one with the bars moving when you play music through the front panel.

>When I open up a program such as VLC media player, it doesn't appear in the Windows volume mixer under any of the audio options

yeah, VLC can't tell a Claro from a Xense, it's just picking up the default audio stream from windows. It was designed for ALSA, see.

First, thank you for replying to my post!

Dolby Headphone is normally turned off, but it makes no difference if I turn it on.

I have my headset plugged into the audio jack which is right next to the microphone jack. The D1 has 3.5mm jacks on it, so perhaps you're thinking of a slightly different card. I've also gotten the same effect regardless of where I plug it in.

I've also realized what's happening now that I've spent the day like this:

The right ear has maximum volume regardless of what windows says the volume is; whereas the windows volume control is working on the left one. This is why both ears are equal if I max out my volume in windows. I've looked at the balance between both ears and still can't figure it out. In my picture my music (or any audio) still plays at maximum volume in my right ear, but is off in my left.

It should also be noted that it does this regardless of the program I'm using. I could be watching Youtube and have the same effect.

This has also happened out of the blue as far as I can tell. I've had this sound card since December and it started doing this during the live stream on Friday night.

3.5mm jacks ARE 1/8" jacks. so you have it in the front plug, which is good. Check the connection and make sure it's plugged ALL the way in. This COULD be a audio jack going bad on you, but I have a feeling it's not.

Do the headphones work properly in a portable music player or pluged into another computer?

Post me a picture of the list of audio devices windows detects (close both those windows you have opened there).

Goodbytes also has a good point

try UNINSTALLING your drivers FIRST and installing these instead. It might fix some things.

Thank you so much! I uninstalled the drivers and then re-installed them and that fixed things. I haven't ever encountered such an odd problem. My first instinct would have been to install and uninstall the drivers if I had no sound at all, but to have the two speakers acting differently really threw me off.
