I was in the process of making a bootable windows 10 flash drive for what i hope are very obvious reasons it was pretty seamless until it was finished and it went into i think "verification" were it got to 50% and failed and gave me an error code (upon further thought i should have kept) and of course i went digging until Avira popped up saying it blocked autorun.inf which it refuses to let me do anything about given Avira has been honestly trustworthy i cant see why it blocked it (see below for hopefully useful information)

I got the file from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I am using a 16gb SanDisk Cruzer (USB 2.0)

The process is being done on an HP 15 notebook

On a side note can the Flash drive hold anything after its used for this or will that cause problems

Use the media creation tool to just download the ISO (so select burning a DVD as it doesn't do the burning automatically, just saves the image locally and you'll have to burn from Explorer yourself), then use Rufus to make the bootable USB. The Media Creation Tool has had many inconsistencies lately with regards to making the bootable USB.

Sometimes, the installer fails. I have had this happen to a faulty USB drive but a bad internet connection, or bad USB port can also cause this issue. Since you said you had an antivirus installed, you might want to disable it temporarily to see if it could be causing the problem.

Also, I have had a few issues using Sandisk flash drives as installer drives. You might want to try another brand.

And yes, once formatted (you may have to use a better formatting tool that what windows provides) the flash drive should be able to be used normally.

As long as it didn't quarantine the file, it should be fine. Try booting it on your laptop.

Since you're downloading the file from Microsoft directly you can figure that the file is from trusted source. Try Disabling your Antivirus COMPLETELY while downloading the file then clone the .iso to the USB drive via rufus as @BlueChinchillaEatingDorito suggested previously. After that process is complete and you've verified the USB then you can re-enable you antivirus.

Sometimes AV software is just a pain as it can block things that aren't even viruses at all. If you're handling any files that you're certain you've acquired from a trusted source, you should be fine to disable any AV software until you're done doing what you need to, or just being sure that an installer/file is added to your AV whitelist.

Most of the time is likely the write speed of your USB drive. It'll take a bit but I've never had any issues copying with rufus if that's the method you're using.

The issue is Avira. I use that for AV as well and because it stops the autorun.inf windows creation tool can't make the usb properly just right click avira in your system icon tray and trun off  "Real Time protection" before you make the run the usb creation tool and it will work.

My brother-in-law had this issue the other day. I advised him to use Rufus and the Windows 10 ISO to create the boot USB instead of the Media Creation Tool. It worked like a charm.
