Hey guys,

I was struggling a bit on finding the right solution here.

My current pc has a i5-4460 but it kinda struggles on some games. It's paired with a gtx 1070 and I found out the cpu is really holding my 1070 back.

Is buying an 8th gen I5 (and supported motherboard) really a good idea?

I was told that going from a I5 to I5 doesn't bring that much of a upgrade, but is that really true?

The only better cpu's that are supported by my motherboard are the Intel Core i7 4790K, Intel core i7-4770K and Intel Core i5 4690K.

Should I get a used one of these and just swap out the cpu, or should I buy a newer i5 with motherboard (if that's even worth it).

I don't really have money for a new i7 or something, or I'd have to sell a kidney.

Thanks ;)

this time it's a good upgrade, the 8400 has 6 cores over 4 on the 4460. but you'll need to spend extra on the board and ddr4 ram. if you can't afford all that then a used i7 4770/xeon 123x v3 will also work.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

nope, not a single 300-series board has ddr3 support, it's ddr4 or bust.

Checked it, and unfortunately my memory is ddr3 :/

The average price for used i7 4770's is close to €200.

Isn't that a lot of money for an old i7? and will it perform that much better?

will the i7 4770 be "future proof"?

4770 is still a very capable CPU today.
