What have i done?

So i have a GTS450 that i wanted to test out, and use it with a 1x to 16x pcie adapter

So this is what i did

image.png.aed5f272043d6b73a14da7614f09f2af.png

And when i power up the PSU-CO PSU the gpu fan starts to spin but when i powerup my PC the GPU fan goes at MAX SPEED and sounds like a get engine and the PC didn't boot (well i only waited for like a min but still)

Oh yea i also replaced the thermal paste on the GTS450

SO what did i potentially fuck up?

pci e pcb should never be connected to a external psu directly,  it gets 75watt powr from the pci-e lanes

using an external psu to power ur gpu isnt a bad idea, just dont friggen connect it to ur pcb lol , that (sata poweR) thing is where u fk up and probably kill the gpu, a 16x card wont work on a 1x slot, but the other way around it will btw

Ok i have the GPU in now, connected directly in the PCIE x16 slot powered by the other PSU, there is no video, trying to download drivers for it now using intel HD

I don't think its dead because its being picked up as "unknown device, VGA compatible" in device manager.

Did you look at the diagram? He's using a 1x to 16x riser cable/PCIe adapter, which is how miners etc make multiple cards work in one system.

You did connect your monitor to the GTS450 and not your still to your PC when you're waiting for it to boot, right?

It's also not connected directly to the psu, as its connected to the riser, connected to his pc.

do not connect the riser's pcie power booster plug to a different psu than the pc is on.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I don't think you can use both at the same time.

=P  just change the sata power thing to ur pci1 to 16x from ur main psu, instead of external  , having the pci-e power connectors from external psu is fine, but pci-e should remain from main psu ( 75watt anyway )
