A 1080Ti would work perfectly, but it would still be bottlenecked by the CPU in many workloads.

macs tend to play nice with AMD more so than Nvidea, so if you could track down a 7950 or 7970 for a reasonable price that might be a good bet. Good luck finding one of those for less than 130$ in the current market however.

7950 or 7990 is not a reasonable alternative to a GTX 1080 Ti.

The CPU bottleneck of the zeons in that mac will make the 1080ti perform like a 7970 anyways, so there is no point in spending the extra money.

Depends on what you are doing with the box.  You can also get used CPU's for it that are MUCH faster.  AFAIK, the top end config is 12c/24t at 3.3ghz.

There comes a point when it makes more sense to buy a new pc then to upgrade an old one. Even with the maxed out config, the poor single threaded performance will be a noticeable bottleneck in many tasks. A 1080ti just seems like overkill, especially considering the fact that many mac apps are optimized for AMD GPU technology.

And the 1080 Ti will still outperform the ancient 7900 series in Open CL.

The proper answer was... get Vega, upgrade the rig itself when/if needed, then put that GPU into the new rig. $600-$1000 is a small price to pay when a new Mac, or even just a newer Mac, costs $1500+.

Trashcan Mac Pro's do not have a upgrade path for the GPU, so those are not a real option either.

7970s are only 5 years old and have aged well. as far as vega goes, you are more likely to find a unicorn then a decently priced vega card in the current market.

7900 series gets stomped by a 1080 Ti which trades blows with Vega.

Another thing to consider is that the MP power supply is incapable of natively running either Vega or the 1080 Ti.  RX 580 or GTX 1080 should not be a problem though.

That Mac Pro doesn’t have the necessary power pins for a 1080Ti I think. An RX 580 night work without issue though.
