Wired vs Wireless? What do you use in 2018 & why? Would you use wired if you had easy access to an ethernet cable?

Wired all day every day where possible. Don't get me wrong; it's not like I carry around a 50ft ethernet cord wiring my laptop in everywhere I go. (Mind you, I'd need an ethernet dongle in the first place, but I digress.) Given the choice I'll always go wired where possible because it's the only solution that "just works", despite all the marketing claims on wireless gear and Bluetooth devices these days. It's also a lot easier to troubleshoot as well.

why not both?

Desktops, servers and IP phones: wired.

Laptops/mobile devices: wireless.

The reason people have issues with wireless, is they expect their $10 WAP to give the same performance as their $10 24-port gigabit switch, not going to happen. if you get propper networking gear, you only have three real issues with wireless:

1. you walked too far away from the WAP (or walked behind a thick concrete wall),

2. your standing next to a microwave cooking something.

3. why are you using a wireless card in a production server?

Wired is preferred when you can get it but I think many people on the forums exaggerate the issues with wireless networking. Sure there is more latency but if implemented correctly you shouldn't be able to notice at all. Get inssider office from metageek (its free for personal use) and make sure your wireless network isnt suffering from co-channel interference or shadowing. You get in what you get out so make sure your AP is located in an optimal place and that your wireless adapter is more than a USB stick.

For everyday users, wireless isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

sure, it will cost a pretty penny to get a good wireless card which is around 100$, but that's about it. Been going wireless for a while now and my connection have only dropped like a few times in 1 year so it says a lot about modern day technology.
