where did you get that i5? Is that corrosion around the heat spreader?

But what about the bottom of the chip? It looks like that chip has had some major water damage to me.

if it's water damage, the contact points should see corrosion as well.

I believe the pads are gold on the LGA chips. Gold is a noble metal that doesn't corrode.

The CPU heating up only means it is converting electricity to heat. It doesn't automatically mean it is working properly.

You are taking someone's word. We already know your motherboard works with your i3 and is compatible with the i5 you just got. But to me that CPU looks like it found it's way out of the bottom of a pond. If you paid for it and can get your money back then that is the route I would take if I were you.

Let me put it this way. Without troubleshooting it by trying it in another known good system or putting a proven good i5 in yours it is impossible to say for 100% sure. It seems neither is an option for you. For comparison here are photos of my core i7 CPU which has been handled and stored properly. It is still in perfect working order. It does not matter if the CPU is 10 years old. It should not look like that poor i5

So the problem is with my i5 right ??? Or should I try once more ???

If you don't have the know how or the means to properly test that CPU there is no way to make that call. But based on the symptoms you describe, the condition of the CPU, and the fact that the guy that sold it to you did not prove it worked all points to a defective CPU being your problem.

If you want to try it, then go for it. Unless you somehow installed it improperly the first time (is that even possible with a ZIF socket?) you'll likely be getting the same result.

If I were you, I would not bother. Try to return it.

You took his word though. Do you know the person? If so even better call him up! Heat is a byproduct of the CPU and is NOT an indication of it being fully operational.
