As far as I know, there aren't any BIOS updates that can make any AM3 platform board compatible with Ryzen.

AMD will send you out a free "doner" CPU to get your system running. Details found here: https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-will-lend-you-an-older-processor-to-update-your-bios-to-support-a-ryzen-apu/

I can't help if you don't quote me. How am I supposed to know if you need my premium support? Now starting at £399.99 a year.

Bios update?  What about the fact that the socket is completely different.

That too.

AMD have different platforms - much like Intel have different sockets. A FX 8320 is an old-gen AM3 chip. We are now on AM4 which has no cross compatibility support. The sockets do not match up - sorry! You will have to upgrade your motherboard too, and most OEM's will have the new BIOS software available so you will not need to update it. If you do, again referring to this: https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-will-lend-you-an-older-processor-to-update-your-bios-to-support-a-ryzen-apu/

If you want that, then just get a 1400 and any motherboard from a reliable brand.  You may not need a BIOS update for the new 2400g, but in statistics like this, it's hard to beat 100%.

Then you will need a new Motherboard, compatible with Ryzen (I.E a AM4 Mobo)

If you get one that is generally recent, chances are you will get one with an updated BIOS. There, however, is no way to tell untill you take it out the box, unless the mobo was released after the CPU. ASUS motherboards (I belive) do offer CPU-less updating through EZUpdate (quoting @Himommies)

I have no idea on their pricing but any RYZEN released last year (R3, R5, R7) would not need an update. However, would you mind telling us what motherboard you are using? Is it AM3 or AM4?

True. @advilnoscope - chances are with the newness of Ryzen APU's is that you will need to update the BIOS. If you have or are going to buy an ASUS mobo they can be upgraded CPU-less. If not you'll need to contact AMD about a dummy CPU to update. It is free and reasonably hassle-free. Make sure your happy with the update procedure for your Mobo (and make sure there is a Ryzen APU update) before buying
