Repeat ethernet with switch

Are network switches connected to the wall able to repeat Ethernet connection if cable is long, and if so how long cable is it possible to have with 100mbps and 1000mbps without degraded performance?

The distance limits for ethernet are between two active devices, so if you need to run ethernet 200m, you can put a switch halfway through. Although it is usually better at that point to use fiber.
