Hello all, after a chat with some people I put together this build using some parts I have and most I do not, I have about £600 in all but the Gpu and PSU / monitor is paid for.

Would appreciate some feed back / recommended builds for my price point.

Currently own -

Windows 10

GTX Nvidia 960

450GB SSD.

Corsair Cx750M (750W)

Need to purchase -

Case - CPU - Motherboard - DDR4 Ram

Case to be decided.

Intel Core i5 8400 Coffee Lake Desktop CPU/Processor BOX

Gigabyte Intel Z370 HD3 Coffee Lake ATX Motherboard

2x

8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black, PC4-17000 (2133), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 13-15-15-28, XMP 2.0, 1.2V

This is the build I'm thinking, any feed back? (Apart from graphics card, will update later.)

which psu do you have?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Go for a Ryzen system with that budget. Anything from a Ryzen 1600 or above, overclocked, with high speed, overclocked RAM, will perform about as well in gaming as an 8400, in some games better, is cheaper and gives you much more of an upgrade path than current Intel Coffee Lake options. Or wait a few weeks for the new Ryzen CPU's, which give you more choice and should drive down the price of current Ryzen CPU's even more.

i'm not sure how a CX750M has an 80+ gold rating or 550w, but it'll be fine.

I've never dabbled with over clocking and know if I did, I'd have to be a lot more aware of my thermals, is it not asking for more to go wrong?

That indeed used to be a factor but most newer CPU's and motherboards are now specifically designed to overclock. The worst that generally happens, unless someone goes completely overboard, is that the built in safety features on the CPU and motherboard will kick in and shut down, or not boot the system and you just rested the CMOS and try a little less voltage or frequency. You can also take it to whatever level you want. If you want to start with just a bump or two in frequency and a modest overclock, then it's a matter of a couple of clicks in many cases and you're good to go. If you want to go further, there are some good tutorials online that take you through how to overclock safely, in more depth. If you take it one step at a time and use a bit of common sense, you can get quite a big performance boost out of many CPU's for very little effort. Don't underestimate yourself. If you have enough sense to ask others about such things, as you are doing here, you have what it takes to get great results from any system that you build.

what sad are you going to buy?

sata or m.2?

if you are only gonna game then sata is ok

if you use it for productivity then I recommend m.2

I bought the Samsung 960 evo and it made a huge difference over hdd

compared to sata its not that big of a difference but if you want the absolute fastest I recommend you get and m.2

oh , so you already have it

if you gonna get 60 then I recommend the new optane 800p

its expensive gb/$ but if you only gonna get 60 it should be enough

the low latency looks like it will be better perf but I haven't tried it myself so idk

linus did a video about it maybe you should watch it

You can get the R5 1600 from Overclockers UK for £149.99 + delivery. I would also go for the Cryorig H7 over the Hyper 212 if you want an aftermarket cooler.

cpu - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/amd-ryzen-5-six-core-1600-3.60ghz-socket-am4-processor-retail-cp-39z-am.html

cooler - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cryorig-h7-single-tower-heatsink-with-120mm-fan-hs-008-cy.html

AM4 bracket - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cryorig-am4-bracket-for-h7-cooler-type-b-hs-00u-cy.html

I would also get the B350-F board over that one. Amazon have it for £94.99

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072C6VPZJ/?tag=pcp0f-21

That should all work out at about £292 or thereabouts with delivery.

The Wraith cooler that comes with the cpu is quite sufficient.

A dual channel memory kit, e.g. 2x4GB, offers slightly better performance. Ryzen cpu do better with faster memory.

If the budget is £600 why not get a more powerful cpu?

After further revision with someone, this is the build I've kind of settled on, though welcome feedback! Seems a near completely different build than I started with

Going for cheaper the better so long as it is an upgrade, moved to the RAM you suggested, but moved away from a Micro ATX build, - will the stock H7 cooler be enough for potential OCing?

Yes on the cooler. The H7 is rated for 140W TDP and the cpu at stock is 65W TDP.

If you are willing to spend a little more you might consider the Ryzen 5 1600 or 1600X. They have two additional multithreaded cores.

Rest of build looks ok.

get a cheaper board or use the stock cooler and get a 1600 instead, only a small price increase for 2 more cores.

I've cut off the FAN but made the CPU a 1600X, when I come up OC to (4.5?) I'll look into a non-stock cooler, does this sound like a good approach?
