Hey guys.  I'm having some issues with my system whenever I have Crossfire X enabled.  As soon as I do something as simple as play a youtube video - let alone play any games - my computer crashes after a couple seconds.  I've tried everything I can think of, but I can't seem to fix the issue.  I've updated all of my drivers, I've checked all connections, etc.  The only thing I haven't done is swapped out either of my cards to test them individually.  That's because I don't have any other cards that are Crossfire compatible, and my rig is submerged in mineral oil.  Any ideas?

Here's my specs for reference:

OS: Windows 10 pro 64-bit (the issue was still present on Windows 7 and 8.1)

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K

Ram: 32 GB of DDR3

Mobo: Asus Sabertooth Z87

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 (two of them)

PSU just might not be up to the task.

Or just try reinstalling windows, or running a Live GNU/Linux USB and installing steam and running dota.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Sorry, I forgot to mention my PSU.  It's a Cooler Master 1200w silent pro gold.  It's definitely got more than enough to power my system.  I've also had to reinstall windows twice so far.  I've never run a GNU, but I'd prefer not to if possible.

Odd issues....

I just finished overhauling my friends pc :
I5 4690k
HD6970 xfire

He had the only issue that games would crash after 20-25min when playing, solved it by swapping cpu cooler and paste... now it runs at 50c full load and no crashing... scores 56-5700 fire strike ;) his kids use it to play Fortnight/unturned etc .. so not demanding titles ,)

his problem was that 1 of his 8gb kingston hyper X memories where defective, ran Memtest86 on all 4 sticks he had in the machine and that 1 gave 56 errors ;) Kingston already sending out a replacement stick ;)

You don't have to install Linux, you can just run it off a flash drive.

One of your GPUs just might be dying or something if you've already reinstalled windows a few times

did you try various older drivers?

Or your CPU/motherboard could be dying, try looking at your event viewer

Either of my GPUs run fine individually.  They're both running exactly as there were when I bought them.

I've tried every driver for the last 5 years.  That's when I built my rig.  I've had the issue since then, and have tried fixing it many times, but I've always given up since I didn't really need Crossfire.  But since games are becoming more and more demanding, I want to get this solved.

I looked at my event viewer, but I didn't see anything indicating any kind of problem with any of my hardware.  A couple instances of programs not running properly, or certain permissions not being met.  But nothing major.

I'll try running a GNU USB tomorrow, and see what happens.

I ran a Memtest the last time this happened (about 2 weeks ago) but it didn't find any problems.
