Depends on the games you run and the settings you play them at. If it's 1080p gaming, then it's likely the processor will not allow as much of a improvement as to be expected but there should still be an appreciable improvement regardless.

I'm playing on a 1080p 144hz monitor. So basically I'll notice an improvement but I won't be running the card at it's full potential.

If we went by http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-980-sli-review,1.html as a rough estimation (a GTX 1080 is about 1.5-1.8x that of a GTX 980), you should still see a significant performance improvement. Though the test system was a six-core Sandy Bridge E, most games in that time period weren't really going to use all of those cores enough to matter.

However I would still expect to see lower numbers than usual.

Hmm alright I'll have a read later. Would u say it's about time to upgrade my cpu tho? Or is it still capable of running todays games well?

If you OC that CPU you can get pretty far with modern games. The single-threaded performance is similar to Ryzen.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

It would do fine. At 4Ghz+ it wouldn't bottleneck much if at all honestly.

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

You will have issues on certain games with a 1080.

As far as boards go, depends on what you want. low end which will be cheap. Or mid/high end which still cost $200 plus.
