One word. Bleh.

It’s not obscenely terrible. It’s just decidedly mediocre.

Don’t get me wrong. It has great specs like a 144Hz display, a GTX 1070 and a quick SSD. All very good stuff. But it unfortunately suffers from the same heating issues that plagued its immediate predecessor.

Yes, it’s improved over the GL502VS but it’s another one of those laptops that absolutely requires the user to open it up and perform a complete repaste with something much better than the stock solution along with thermal pads to whisk heat away from other components in order to provide an acceptable experience. I don’t think the issue lies with the cooling system itself as @ZM Fong stated but more to do with a design that is known to not be very good at managing heat alongside a frankly awful stock thermal compound application and solution which means the cooling system is not going to do its work efficiently.

I generally recommend people look into some of the boutique manufacturers if they want a supreme high-end gaming laptop. The RoG GL line as a whole is somewhat mediocre with occasional hints of brilliance on some areas. Which is really a shame when you know what ASUS is capable of with their G and GX line.

I know ASUS can do better. I just wished they’d make the GL’s design more like the MSI GE Raider series where there’s a deep focus on efficient heat dissipation and cooling while maintaining a reasonable form factor. Again, the GL503VS is not terrible, but there are other options out there that will probably give you more performance for less cash.

If that’s literally the only laptop you are able to go for, then you must do a complete repaste and thermal mods when you get it. But I know there are better options out there for the same price and especially less. Take your time and make sure you read all reviews and note what issues it may have.

A couple of Clevos have similar specs but seem more robust overall

There’s also the Dell Inspiron 7577 if you’re willing to step a little back to a 1060 Max-Q but due to its cooling, overclocking it to stock levels should be no problem.

If you want something portable enough and has 1070 GPU, MSI GE Raider. For 1070 Max-Q (performance between 1060N and 1070N), Gigabyte Aero 15X, Clevo P950/P957 and MSI GS63VR are good choices. Keep in mind that thin gaming laptops tend to have higher surface temps and higher fan noise compared to a bulkier laptop with better cooling.

So all in all, is portability important to you? That's an important question so that I can suggest something else for you.

Yes portability is something I want but I won’t something heavy because I won’t be carrying it to college everyday.

How much are you going to be gaming and what sort of games?

If you're not going to be gaming heavily, stepping back to a 1060 might be a good option. Avoid G-Sync models if you want good battery life.

I want to play pubg, assassins creed series, nfs payback kind of games

1060 is enough for most games at high settings. If you can afford, go for Gigabyte Aero 15. Make sure you undervolt both CPU and GPU as well as perform a repaste (liquid metal if you know how to do it). Or just go for the options I listed above.

Any boutique manufacturers or can you find a solid deal on a laptop with a GTX 1060 6GB at least that is known for good cooling?
