Whats up guys looking for some information and help. I want to build a PC to handle NAS with back up and Cloud services for personal use. The idea is to have everything on my network connected so if i want to watch a video, music or view/edit files on my devices (TV, laptop, portable devices, home audio receiver, xbox). Also to be able to do those features when not on my own network securely.

Question 1) What software will i need for this set up? leaning more towards a linux based OS

Question 2) this is what i plan on buying for hardware

                 (2 drives 1 for storage 1 for backup) https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822179299

                 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157793

all i'm missing is the ram should i go with 16GB? Also any suggestions on better and cheaper drives for reliability.

Any information and help would be greatly appreciated.

Software wise FreeNas is always a popular choice but if you want Linux then you can always use OpenMediaVault, it's really easy to install once you've got a LAMP stack running (or any other web server like Nginx).

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

I hate to be one of those guys... but on the track you're going you'll end up dropping about $800 on a box with no drives and no OS. While it might be expandable there will be a learning curve. If what you're wanting is storage with room for future expansion and capability to transcode media on the fly you could get something like a Synology DiskStation. It is going to be much easier to setup and use. It should work fine for transcoding 1080P movies too if that is something you're also wanting to do.

Synology 4 Bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ Network Storage

If you're stuck on wanting to build something yourself that's fine too. IMO If there is one single component you should not skimp on for a storage device it is hard drives. You could have the best NAS system on earth but if your hard drives are junk, you're going to have a bad time...

There's no place like ~

Yeah I’m going to change the case to something that is more expandable. Also going to change to 3 https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16822235013

And 1 https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16822236599

what I would like to do is set up the three in parity with redundancy for everyday file reading/writing/streaming and the one 4TB to just do a snap shot of the drives for back up purposes is that possible? The synology looks good but I like the idea of having a tower do it for the flexibility.
