just wondering if these parts are compatible just in case I decide to go desktop instead of a laptop. ( I have a spare ssd )

You need a z370 motherboard to go with the i5 8400.

You can buy a copy of windows online and it will either come with a USB key or you can make a USB installer yourself directly from Microsoft.
