PC for Programmer

Hi guys!

I had been deciding these for a while now. I am a programmer as a hobbiyist and I wanted to buy a new PC. I was on a strict budget and came up with these. Will the following build suffice?

I am not a hardcore programmer but I may do some mediocore stuff after a year or two, so shall I be taking this laptop :

HP FHD Laptop

Or this desktop?

1. i3 8100

2. B370 Motherboard (upcoming)

3. 8 GB DDR4 RAM

4. 128 GB SSD

5. Corsair Carbide Spec - 1

6. Corsair 450W PSU

7. BenQ FHD 21.5 inch monitor

And I don't travel a lot.

All suggestions are welcome

Thank you

The laptop has no SSD (and only a 5400 rpm drive) so will feel much slower.

I always prefer a desktop because:

  • Better price/performace
  • Better future upgrades
  • Can attach more monitores (I love my 3 monitor setup for programming)

Obvious downside of not being able to travel with it but as you say, you don't travel a lot...

It's personal preference...

Hey!

If you do not need the portability of a laptop do not go for it over a desktop pc. You will always get much better performance for the price with desktop. Other than that I would rather go for Ryzen 5 2400g/AB350 motherboard which would be similar price but more suitable for your needs.

First welcome to the programming club, it's an addicting hobby/lifestyle. Second, I would say like the others have commented that unless you need portability a desktop is the way to go. Third, I would look at a larger monitor or two monitors if you can swing it. Basically the ability to have code open on one screen (or window on a larger monitor) and be able to run/debug your application full screen on the other window is a life saver sometimes. Also just the ability to have both the code and a web browser for documentation and google searches on the screens at the same time is a lifesaver.

Just my 2 bits.
