So i have a MSI mobile desktop (trident) with a 1060 GPU, I never overclock and always try to make sure that my GPUs don't overheat.

About a month ago I started up a game and it was running poorly. I did not receive any errors or notifications but when i went to check on my GPU & Drivers I couldn't find it anywhere on my system.

It's like it never existed. The only place that i can find it is in the history of the device manager, where it shows as a past device. I'm kinda stupid when it comes to pc but i know enough and have look up enough info to test and try out different software things on the computer. I obviously made sure that all the drives where up to date, and checked for any signs that might tell me what happened. I also had a 1070 external give out on me about 2 weeks after.

I have a MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro laptop that I have hooked up in the same location and other then a fan issue on the gpu it has worked fine.

There is 3 issues I'm thinking are a possibility

  1. Something is wrong with my power supply (Room Power not PSU) such as maybe not enough.

  2. Something in the Bios needs to be updated

  3. My Card Just took a shit (But its weird how it was totally fine up till it disappeared)

My Questions other then Obviously how to fix it are;

  1. Is there any type of software that would tell me if I'm getting enough power or do I have to find and use a voltmeter?

  2. When a GPU goes bad is it normal for it to just disappear completely.

Ever watched the cloverfield paradox on netflix? When they swap between dimensions, that's what your 1060 in your laptop did.

..On a serious note, is there anyway you can test another laptop with your external 1070? That would be a quick way to figure out if is a problem with the cards or a problem with your laptop which we could continue to then test other things maybe to figure it out.

Hey, once I had a similar issue with a ITX system I take with me as checked luggage when I work abroad.

First question: have you shipped the computer recently? :P

In my case the GPU wasn't seen anymore from any OS installed on the machine.

The integrated GPU was perfectly working, given I pulled out the unrecognised discrete GPU (GTX960).

If I pulled off the GTX960 and pulled in an old 7300GT it was working.

If I pulled off the GTX960 and pulled in an HD5870 it was intermittently working. In was unstable and kept switching back to iGPU.

The GTX960 itself was working perfectly in another system.

My conclusion was a damage to the PCIe slot/the motherboard. It seemed to me that PCIe3 negotiation of GTX960 was not possible on the damaged slot, while older card worked quite well (HD5870) or perfectly (7300GT) because using older PCIe implementations.

The flight company refunded me and my GTX960 still works perfectly in a rebuilt mini-ITX system. The old system is being used by my father with merely the iGPU.

All this to suggest you to test the same slot with other video cards, if possible older. In addition, if you can, test the GTX1060 in another system.
