Just remember something that might be smoother than the aluminum pad and that would be the glass I1 and I2 mousepads that steelseries used to make. They were even more frictiony and thus louder than my SX aluminum pad. My friend actually still uses one as his mouse pad and loves it.

Also I tried to have c4 male me a hard pad since thell cover anything you send them. I got a stainless steel sheet cut it 12x10 and had it sand blasted. The person used standard grit sand and it curled all up killing that plan :(
