Help: Power Surge on USB port error

I have usb 3.0 ports on my dell monitor (U2718Q) that randomly started having issues. An error notification pops up saying “power surge on the USB port: a usb device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its usb hub.” There’s nothing plugged into the ports so I have no idea why this started happening. It was working fine before. The pop ups started out of nowhere and nothing was plugged in at the time. Now the ports don’t work. Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone before? I tried changing the pass through cable to a different usb 3 port on the pc and still same issue. The ports themselves on the pc work fine when I tested with a usb stick.
