I am upgrading my CPU from a Core i5-6500 to a Core i7-6700k. I was wondering if I would need to do anything before or after the installation of the new CPU in Windows 10 Home 64-bit to make it work or just adapt to it? My PC Parts Picker list for my PC is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Trappingguy/saved/WxB3FT . PC Parts picker says the BIOS on my motherboard and the CPU should work together. Thanks, Aaron

Pretty sure you gotta re-activate your Windows. It doesn't like "core" components changing (mobo, CPU).

Try to back up your current key if you can, and go have a talk with MS support (they're usually nice enough).

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

So will it just have a "Activate Windows" popup and I just re-type in my key or will I have to re-install Windows? I have a OEM version of Windows 10 BTW. @bob51zhang

I'm pretty sure you need a re-install.

It would be a waste of money to upgrade to just an 6700K unless you're getting it really cheap. You also can't overclock anyways, and I'd worry about the cheap VRM on that motherboard.

Only when swapping the motherboard itself do you need to re-activate.

I've changed out other components and never had to do it. Even if you do have to re-activate, if it's tied to you MS account then it should activate right away, might just have to say "I changed hardware" and you'll be good

I will do that! @Lurick Hopefully that will work! @Streetguru The i7-6700k is on sale and has $130.00 off the original price and my i5 is starting to wear out. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Doesn't that still put it at $200 where the 6 core R5 1600 and soon to be R5 2600 will be?

Also would adding 8GB more of RAM be the same process? @Lurick

You wouldn't need to reinstall windows for the RAM I don't think.

but your motherboard's VRM is god awful, would not advice sticking a 6700K onto it, you are far better off switching to AM4 and getting a 6 core CPU in the process.

Are you sure it's your i5 that's the issue and not the crap motherboard?
