Should i take it?

 or should i upgrade the mobo,that supports better configurations.....

 

The problems is...when you upgrade the motherboard into something more modern, 99% of the old hardware will probably not be compatible meaning you might as well just build a new PC.

Let's see, from the pentium 4 days:

  • Changing the motherboard alone will mean you need a new cpu since it's a different chipset. (unless you have a really old "new" motherboard)
  • I'm pretty sure they used IDE instead of SATA so no luck on the harddrive. 
  • The new motherboard won't have an AGP slot so you will need a new graphics card (if gaming).
  • The case is not likely to support the new motherboard size standards.

That's pretty much a new build. I say sell the lot and build a more modern PC, you will have a far better experience. I just recently built one for a friend around £480.

There are still many people in the world who use Pentiums. Even my school have more than 10 of them.Now they have Amd Athlons and core 2 duo and i5 and pentiums

yes, pentium dual cores. Pentium 4 was a failure.

Ok something that old could only really be used as a home server/torrent box/footrest, You are not going to be able to start gaming well at least not games that are semi modern. I wouldn't put any money into upgrading it other than possibly some more hdd space if you go the homeserver route. You don't need graphics for a server so don't upgrade that.

 

also get rid of XP as it is not going to be supported much longer so no more security updates :( if server install Linux (choose your own distro there are many) if anything else you might be able to get win 7 running but I wouldn't bet to hard on it.

One thing I've learned recently that was fun and eye opening is learning how to SSH into a headless server. I.E. accessing another computer through your network/internet and working with the computer remotely. Usually through a terminal (text) interface. You get to feel especially nerdy when you get a web server up and running on a remote machine and you can view the web page on your computer, edit it, hit refresh, and see the changes. Plus once you are comfortable with that then there is nothing stopping you from working with any other linux server remotely regardless of where it is.

 

Other than that the 400GB would be good for either a home fileserver or even personal file hosting so you can have it accessible from anywhere. If neither of those then I like the footrest suggestion too.

What socket is the p4. If its 478 then your can get really high end boards for nothing. An abit or asus are the best.
